13 Great Movies I saw in 2009

Well it's been some time since I blogged, but I won't rant on about reasons why... I just thought I would let you all know some of the best movies I saw in 2009. It seemed to be a year of sci fi movies with many great movies coming out about robots, time travel and space etc.

So here they are, my top 11 movies from 2009:

13. Coraline

"An adventurous girl finds another world that is a strangely idealized version of her frustrating home, but it has sinister secrets."

12. 2012

Enjoyed this movie as it has more of a story than just the end of the world and some people trying to escape. Yes it is the end of the world and a family are trying to escape but there is more to it than that. Generally great effects and a well made adventure.

11. The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

"The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is a fantastical morality tale, set in the present day. It tells the story of Dr Parnassus and his extraordinary 'Imaginarium', a travelling show where members of the audience get an irresistible opportunity to choose between light and joy or darkness and gloom. Blessed with the extraordinary gift of guiding the imaginations of others, Dr Parnassus is cursed with a dark secret. Long ago he made a bet with the devil, Mr Nick, in which he won immortality."

10. Terminator Salvation

Everyone will have their own opinion of this movie, all I will say is great effects, but overall I'll give it 3 and a half stars.

9. Watchmen

Really good movie! That's all I am saying.

8. Up

Very sad opening part of this movie and really great story. I tend to believe that animated movies such as the Shrek series are rolled out just to make millions and billions of dollars without much care as to whether the movie is any good or not. But Up is really good and really worth a look.

7. I Love You Man

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie as it is about a couple that are engaged and a guy that does not have a good male friend to be his best man. I really related to the characters in this movie and think this movie was really well crafted.

8. Zack & Miri Make a Porno

Funny movie, very original and well worth hiring on DVD.

7. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

Generally as good or better than the prequel.

6. Inglourious Basterds

This is ranked number 68 on the IMDB top 250. Nothing else needs to be said.

5. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

"Tells the story of Benjamin Button, a man who starts aging backwards with bizarre consequences."

4. Bruno

This movie is REEEEEALLY funny! I liked it better than Borat, and I really liked Borat.

3. The Surrogates

"In the near future, humans live in isolation and only interact through robotic bodies that serve as surrogates. When several humans are murdered when their surrogates are destroyed, a cop (Bruce Willis) investigates the crimes through his own surrogate. After a near fatal encounter, the cop's surrogate is destroyed and forces him to bring his human form out of isolation and unravel a conspiracy behind the crimes."

"The filmmaking trio behind the hit sci-fi sequel Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines re-team to explore a future in which humans live in isolation while only communicating with their fellow man through robots that serve as social surrogates and are better-looking versions of their human counterparts. Bruce Willis stars as an FBI agent who enlists the aid of his own surrogate to investigate the murder of the genius college student who invented the surrogates. As the case grows more complicated, however, the withdrawn detective discovers that in order to actually catch the killer he will have to venture outside the safety of his own home for the first time in many years, and enlists the aid of another agent (Radha Mitchell) in tracking his target down. Jonathan Mostow directs co-screenwriters Michael Ferris and John Brancato's adaptation of the graphic novel by author Robert Venditti and illustrator Brett Weldele."

2. Star Trek

It was kind of a surprise to me that I liked this movie so much.
"A chronicle of the early days of James T. Kirk and his fellow USS Enterprise crew members."

Number 145 in the IMDB top 250.

1. District 9

F*cking brilliant! All I will say about this movie is see it!

"An extraterrestrial race forced to live in slum-like conditions on Earth suddenly finds a kindred spirit in a government agent who is exposed to their biotechnology."

Some movies from 2009 that I missed but really want to see (any suggestions welcome):

Public Enemies

Knowing

S Darko

Planet 51

GI Joe: Rise of The Cobra

What about Brian?

I just have to say: how good is this show?!!!!! I have been watching this for a few weeks as it is on Sunday nights at 9:30 (after Grey's Anatomy) and it is really good! Of course it is not as clever as Prison Break or Heroes but for a show that was barley advertised at all this is a real beauty. I find this a very easy show to watch and quite entertaining and looks at some interesting relationships. For those that haven't seen it, it is about a guy who is in love with his best friend's girlfriend but cannot have her. If you want a light drama this is the one for you! Hope I don't sound like some sort of network marketer!

I was thinking tonight about the rules of dating and what are the rules of dating your friend's ex gf/bf? Some would say this is a no no but others would have no problem with it. Personally I think that if my friend dated my ex soon after I broke up with her I would be rather pissed! So I think it is a time issue. After a few months maybe it becomes more acceptable. It would also depend on the feelings of your friend and whether they still have feelings for their ex.

The David Hicks Saga

The David Hicks case has been in the news a bit lately and has been going on for far too long in my opinion. The Australian government seems to be finally getting more involved, which may be a surprise to some, but not considering the imminent election.

It appears that many people have assumed Hicks guilty based on what they have seen or heard in the media. We keep seeing the picture of him on TV holding a rifle, which does not help his case. People are quick to judge without looking at all the evidence.

I think it is a disgrace that it has been going on for five years and still no trial. Hicks has been kept in appalling conditions, and regardless of whether he is guilty or not, his basic human rights have been violated. One must ask – how many people have had similar atrocities been inflicted upon?

Edit: (I did not include the following paragraph in my letter)

We need to ask why hasn’t he had a trial yet? Who is to blame? Of course the Bush government is at fault but have the American people protested? Does anyone care that so many people are treated like animals in the so called ‘free world’?

The Howard government has avoided the issue for far too long and it will be a welcome relief, if and when he gets voted out of power. At present it seems impossible for Hicks to get a fair trial, as both governments would look frivolous if Hicks is found innocent. We can only hope that some action is taken soon to get Hicks out of the current situation.

Some good viewing for 2007

I have watched a few episodes of Heroes recently, (I downloaded them) and can see why it is so popular in the States. Although it is well made I think it lacks the character development that shows like Prison Break and Lost are able to achieve. It does have good character development just not as good as other shows.

Prison Break and Lost both focus on particular characters on each show and give background on their lives. This is partly what makes them such great viewing. They are also very suspensful which keeps the viewer watching. I also find Heroes a bit confusing. There are two guys with longish black hair of similar nationalites and it makes it confusing in the first few episodes when you are trying to figure out who is who. One of them is a mathematician whose father was killed because of his research. There also seems to be a few other characters whose fathers have died.
All in all Heroes is a good show.

My recommendations for 2007:

  • Prison Break - Brilliantly written, great acting, great direction
  • Lost - Very suspensful.
  • Heroes - looks like a winner.
  • Nip Tuck - I have seen the first three seasons and this show really holds your attention with it's twists and turns
  • Veronica Mars - Quite a clever show, from the creaters of Dawson's Creek, only this show is much more interesting.
  • The O. C. (although I just read this has been axed :( )
  • The Simpsons (of course)
  • Family Guy
  • American Dad (One of the funniest animated series - created by the Family Creators)
  • House

My predictions for good new shows:

  • Brothers and Sisters
  • Ugly Betty
  • The Con Test
  • Australia's Got Talent
  • Teen Fat Camp
  • 1 Vs 100

Life in Melbourne

Well I've been in melbourne about six months now its time to write something about life here.
One thing people talk about no matter what city or country they are in is the weather. When I came back from Christmas in Canberra the other day I noticed that it's quite a bit hotter at home here than home in canberra. Perhaps this house gets a little hotter but I think mainly Melbourne feels hotter as it is at a lower altitude.

As for getting around Melbourne I like driving because there are so many places to do U-turns! Not like Sydney where you can drive for ages without being able to turn easily. Melbourne has buses and trains too which I occasionally catch, but not too often. I think this town, like most Australian towns, is still not designed well enough for people to rely solely on public transport.

I am yet to explore the beaches much here and still have seen much countryside. I will make that my aim - to explore the natural part of this strange land.

Here's some photos I took a few weeks ago.

World Cup Predictions

I heard an interesting story on the radio this morning. Apparently in about 1970 the Socceroos went to Mozambique to see a witch doctor for some good karma. The witch doctor then said it would cost $1000 and the Socceroos didn't pay so the Witch doctor put a curse on them. Thirty years later John Safran went to Mozambique and somehow got the curse removed, and surprise surprise, here we are today.

What I think the world rankings should look like:

1. Brazil
2. Germany
3. Italy
4. Netherlands
5. England
6. Argentina
7. Czech Republic
8. France
9. Spain
10. Australia <--- Come on aussie

Who will win?
My Predictions

Now I don't know much about soccer but thought I would make some predictions.

Winner: Germany
Reason: Host country and runners up last world cup.

Other possible winners:

Brazil
Reason: Duh

Italy
Good team, and South American's find it hard to win in Europe.

England
Reason: Good team and playing well.

Argentina
Reason: They are next to Brazil and they love their soccer.

Netherlands
Reason: Europeans stand a good chance and Netherlands are damn good.

Spain
Reason: Looking strong this year.

Switzerland:
Reason: They knocked Turkey out of the Cup and they are leading their group which includes France.

Outside Chance:

France:
Reason: They have Zinedine Zindane and they aren't a bad team.

Ghana
Reason: Playing very well and beat Czech Republic

Portugal
Reason: About time for someone new to win it.

Sweden
Reason: Those Europeans and their soccer.

Australia
Reason: Aussie Aussie Aussie!

Brisbane trip to the Scrabble Nationals

This year I really enjoyed the Nationals. I probably say that every year but I had more fun this year. Firstly I met lots of interesting people. That's what Scrabble tournaments are really about - meeting people. People i've heard of or played on the internet. I met Peter Kougi whom I have played alot with. He's a top bloke. I met Julie Brice whom looks better in person that her picture. She did well as expected. I also met Quentin Abbott who is suprisingly cool for Scrabble. We didn't chat that much though. Susan mentioned that Scrabble attracts socially inept people. I agree with that somewhat but surely some must be socially ept.

This was my first experience of staying in a backpackers by myself, which was fun. I met a german guy the first night who was about 37 but looked younger, and then a german girl the second night who was very attractive and reminded me of Nardia - a girl I used to work with and really liked. She was quite flirty and was changing when I walked into the dorm. I forgot it was a mixed dorm. Sadly I didn't get to chat to her again for I was playing Scrabble the whole time.

I also met an English guy from leads who is a civil engineer. So we chatted about engineering and life, and he seemed to use the phrase "Bog standard" a lot.

At the tournament I had a couple of funny stories/anecdotes. On the game next to me between David More and Jan Serisier David played the word Fucker and Jan challenged. The helper that came over couldn't have been much older than five years old and she told him to go away. So then she got Wilma to take the challenge slip.

I finished 1 half a win more than my last Nationals so I gained a few rating points. As always I would like to do better but it was still great fun.

PSEUDOWORDS

Warning: Some may find the following words offensive.

These words are courtesy of Pseudodictionary.com

AUTOBITCH - To effortlessly slip into an angry, ranting mode, usually for a set purpose. Similar in meaning to insta-bitch but typically self-referential, unapologetic, and non-derogatory.

e.g., If he calls me that one more time, I'll going into autobitch mode. That'll teach him not to fool with me, the fool.

e.g., The product delivered was inferior to what was advertised, so I e-bitched to their web site.

INSTA-BITCH - Referring to the ability to instantly turn into a true bitch. Also for a person who can turn into a bitch with the least bit of provocation or for no provocation at all.

BOFH - Bastard Operator From Hell. {?Bitch Operator From Hell as well?} Basically, a BOFH is computer support person with no desire to actually help or support users. All she wants is smply to make her own existence as easy as possible. This term is an older internet favorite, from the long running series of humor articles credited to and copyrighted by Simon Travaglia. The first known BOFH post appears in the Google Usenet Archive, June 1992. For current articles, see The Registef.

Habits include confiding in nearly every stranger who passes by, in hope of receiving an illuminating piece of advice that will instantaneously solve all self-created problems.

e.g., It took only two questions to realise that it was magaxenophilia, not a love of the culture, that had caused the Afrikaans Times to accidentally fall out of her bookbag. Singapore government is deluded

Singapore's decision to execute Nguyen Tuong Van for drug trafficking is immoral and without reason.

The Singaporean government dish out death penalty for drug crimes that are pale in comparison to crimes of murderers and paedophiles. The method they use to kill people of hanging, is also very old fashioned and seems like the dark ages to me. The electric chair isn't much better, in fact I am sure it is probably worse. A simple injection would be the best option, but countries like Singapore simply don't care about things like that. Perhaps be killed would be better than be jailed for life but the government still should not have to right to kill whoever they like.

Reasons why Nguyen shouldn't be executed:

Fact 1

Killing people for single, small offences is wrong and will not deter drug syndicates from trafficking. It will simply push up the price of drugs and make the industry more profitable for those at the top.

Fact 2

Nguyen did not have a record of drug trafficking and should have been give more leniency than a drug boss, or murderer! The sentence simply does not fit the crime.

Fact 3

Nguyen was transporting drugs from Cambodia to Australia and was just passing through Singapore, (however stupid that may be.) He should be tried in Australia not Singapore.

Fact 4

Singapore have ridiculous punishments like death for carrying a weapon whilst committing robbery. This is a good deterrent but is simply inhumane and draconian. Singapore should cut there ties with Myanmar (Burma) if they want to cut down on the drugs being imported.

Uni Almost Finished

With my degree almost complete, the job hunt begins. I went in to the careers centre the other day and chatted to the lady there. She gave me some ideas about approaching companies and making contacts. I also updated my resume and started applying for a few jobs. I got a response from GHD in Newcastle and they gave me a phone interview. After some tricky questions they said that they were looking for someone more in the area of project management and that I seemed like I was more interested in design. They said they would pass on my resume. It was an interesting interview though. The hardest questions are the most general ones. Like describe a problem and how you solved it.
On another note here's a problem I have not solved fully yet. My right arm has been quite sore for a while now. Hopefully when I see the doctor he will have some good advice. Damn RSI.
